How to remove the iCloud lock and bypass activation lock for your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch - latest 2018 services tested

We've all been there - gone onto eBay to grab ourselves a bargain second hand iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch only to get it delivered, fire it up and then see the dreaded screen "Your device is Activation Locked”. Then it asks you for the previous owner’s iCloud details - and you have no idea what they are and the eBay seller is unresponsive to your requests for help.

There's a wide variety of websites out there promising to help you out, some working, some offering a low success rate, some expensive, and some cheap. I decided to write a review of the services I tried.

Jailbreak 0/10

I was told if I could jailbreak the handset I could unlock it. Jailbreaking is the process of getting “root” access to your device using Mac/PC software. Once your device is rooted you can do whatever you want with it… or so I thought.

So I tried the latest jailbreak method, which only succeeded in downloading a useless file to my mac which was a .exe, so I borrowed my friends Windows laptop and it turns out the .exe was a crypto currency miner virus. Great. At least it wasn’t my laptop!

Tried a jailbreak from somewhere else (ultrasnow or something) - it didn’t work with latest iOS software.

Finally I found a jailbreak which worked with iOS 11 - no option to remove iCloud WHATSOEVER. I did some digging around on forums and realised that devices aren’t locked to iCloud accounts on the device itself - the handset actually contacts an Apple server whenever it boots up which links serial numbers to iCloud accounts.

Essentially I wasted a whole day (luckily no money though) and achieved nothing.

iPhoneIMEI.net 9/10

There’s a lot of good reviews of this service, and now I know why. All 3 of my iCloud locked devices worked with no glitches. I tested this service with a USA (T-Mobile) iPhone, an iPad from Europe (EE UK), and finally another iPhone from Australia (Vodafone).

Here’s the basic steps I followed:

  1. Went to iphoneimei.net which quoted a price of $42 and initially all I had to do was enter my IMEI number, iPhone model and pay the fee.
  2. At the check out payment was taken via Nochex, a well known secure payment gateway.
  3. I received an email to say my unlocking requests had been received and was told to wait. I was given a tracking page where I could monitor progress.
  4. I waited. 24 hours passed. I started to get nervous. I emailed support and within 3 hours they had replied telling me not to panic, that the service can take up to three days as they have staff within Apple who unlink the iCloud account from particular IMEI.
  5. Sure enough after 2 days (3 for the European handset) I received emails to say that the iCloud account had been removed and to turn the device off and then on. I did this and it just jumped straight to the home screen and I could access the device.
  6. Not a sign of the previous owners iCloud account, I tried Apple Music and was able to sign on with my own details, all my playlists loaded up. Next I flicked over to the iCloud settings and I entered my own and all my photos started appearing! It was just like getting a new device.

I was surprised, I was expecting an email telling me what the iCloud username and password were which I needed to get into the device, but thinking about it for data privacy reasons no way are they going to release someone else’s iCloud account details.

Brilliant service and no time or money wasted whatsoever. Just had to let them do their thing.

OfficialiPhoneUnlock.co.uk 8/10

To test this service, we used an iPhone from USA on T-Mobile and an iPhone from Canada Telus - both with locked iCloud accounts.

Here are the steps we then followed:

  1. Purchased the iCloud unlock from OfficialiPhoneUnlock.co.uk
  2. We were then prompted to enter our Serial Numbers which can be found on your device by navigating to Settings / General / About there was no need to select the model of the device.
  3. We received a confirmation email asking us to wait 48 hours for the unlock to process.
  4. After 24 hours we thought we’d try and contact support via email. We got a reply although it took 8 hours so not as quick as iPhoneIMEI
  5. Being the impatient type we tried after 36 hours and it worked flawlessly

The reason we scored iPhoneIMEI higher is just down to personal preference of the user experience. We also preferred using iPhoneIMEI as it was an American company which meant we could contact support in normal working hours.

iCloudUnlockBuddy 0/10

This promises to give you software which you can download to your Mac or PC and then plug your phone in and then remove the iCloud account by changing the serial number of your device.

Unforunately it was a total scam. I got the software free of charge, then was told the software wouldn't work unless I bought an expensive cable. (software which claimed to unlock the device without the cable was apparently ‘coming soon’).

So I paid for the cable ($59), waited three weeks and the cable still hadn’t arrived. There was no way of contacting the company to complain about this (support overloaded etc, no email address given). I doubt the software would ever work. A company being unresponsive to any kind of support is a useless company.

UPDATE - even after 2 months of waiting still no sign of the magic “cable”.
