We've all been there - gone onto eBay to grab ourselves a bargain second hand iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch only to get it delivered, fire it up and then see the dreaded screen "Your device is Activation Locked”. Then it asks you for the previous owner’s iCloud details - and you have no idea what they are and the eBay seller is unresponsive to your requests for help.
There's a wide variety of websites out there promising to help you out, some working, some offering a low success rate, some expensive, and some cheap. I decided to write a review of the services I tried.
There’s a lot of good reviews of this service, and now I know why. All 3 of my iCloud locked devices worked with no glitches. I tested this service with a USA (T-Mobile) iPhone, an iPad from Europe (EE UK), and finally another iPhone from Australia (Vodafone).
Here’s the basic steps I followed:
I was surprised, I was expecting an email telling me what the iCloud username and password were which I needed to get into the device, but thinking about it for data privacy reasons no way are they going to release someone else’s iCloud account details.
Brilliant service and no time or money wasted whatsoever. Just had to let them do their thing.
To test this service, we used an iPhone from USA on T-Mobile and an iPhone from Canada Telus - both with locked iCloud accounts.
Here are the steps we then followed:
The reason we scored iPhoneIMEI higher is just down to personal preference of the user experience. We also preferred using iPhoneIMEI as it was an American company which meant we could contact support in normal working hours.
This promises to give you software which you can download to your Mac or PC and then plug your phone in and then remove the iCloud account by changing the serial number of your device.
Unforunately it was a total scam. I got the software free of charge, then was told the software wouldn't work unless I bought an expensive cable. (software which claimed to unlock the device without the cable was apparently ‘coming soon’).
So I paid for the cable ($59), waited three weeks and the cable still hadn’t arrived. There was no way of contacting the company to complain about this (support overloaded etc, no email address given). I doubt the software would ever work. A company being unresponsive to any kind of support is a useless company.
UPDATE - even after 2 months of waiting still no sign of the magic “cable”.
I was told if I could jailbreak the handset I could unlock it. Jailbreaking is the process of getting “root” access to your device using Mac/PC software. Once your device is rooted you can do whatever you want with it… or so I thought.
So I tried the latest jailbreak method, which only succeeded in downloading a useless file to my mac which was a .exe, so I borrowed my friends Windows laptop and it turns out the .exe was a crypto currency miner virus. Great. At least it wasn’t my laptop!
Tried a jailbreak from somewhere else (ultrasnow or something) - it didn’t work with latest iOS software.
Finally I found a jailbreak which worked with iOS 11 - no option to remove iCloud WHATSOEVER. I did some digging around on forums and realised that devices aren’t locked to iCloud accounts on the device itself - the handset actually contacts an Apple server whenever it boots up which links serial numbers to iCloud accounts.
Essentially I wasted a whole day (luckily no money though) and achieved nothing.
